Bath & West Wiltshire SFA Easter
2010 Tour
Primary school children from
the region again enjoyed a fabulous Easter 5-day football trip to
Holland.
Flying the flag for team UK was the main aim of the trip but
Bristol City FC, Tim Kirk's report seems to reveal that the trip had several
other high points (or low points, depending on your view) , ranging from:- Who
is looking after the chocolate? How do we cross the English Channel when French
ferry workers go on strike? A rather questionable reason why our own Sane Kiely
was in the coach loo whilst going through border customs.
All that
aside, some brilliant football took place and if you can wade though the very
descriptive, and humorous report from Tim Kirk you'll see that undoubtedly
there's a film just waiting to be made about the eventful trip.

Tag Rugby Tournament On 17th March schools in West
Wiltshire attended a Tag Rugby Tournament organised by the West Wiltshire
Schools Sport Partnership and held at Bradford on Avon Rugby Club. 220
pupils from 22 Primary Schools attended the event with teams playing in 4
groups with their results determining which competition they would play in for
the knock out stages. The group winners and runners up went into the cup
competition with the final four teams being selected to represent West
Wiltshire at the County Finals on 30th April at Warminster Rugby Club. The 4
Schools were St John's, Bowerhill, Westbury Leigh and Fitzmaurice meaning each
of the towns in the partnership will have a representative. St John's beat
Bowerhill in the final and will be tipped to do well at the county
finals.
| Shane Kiely, Partnership SSCo, said "
The standard of rugby was exceptional and it was very pleasing to see |
|
| the coaching the pupils have
received put into practice at this event, hopefully as a result, one of our
schools will go on to become Wiltshire Champions". |
The event was a great success, as at
the start of the programme many of the pupils had never played tag rugby before
but through their enthusiasm and the leadership from staff and coaches an
excellent standard of Rugby was displayed by all teams. Special thanks to
Bradford on Avon Rugby club for providing the Venue, Alan Low (Rugby
Development officer) for providing all the referees and to St Laurence Sports
Leaders who helped with the administration on the day.

The semi finals were both close games
with Westbury schools winning both games. The final was nail biting with
neither team able to dominate and both goal keepers keeping a clean sheet.
Extra time was played and each team scored the maximum 3 goals in the penalty
shoot out. It was eventually decided on the 5th penalty shoot out, with Bitham
Brook taking the top spot over their close neighbours, Westbury Leigh. Both
teams should be congratulated on a thrilling performance.

West Wiltshire Primary School Girls
6-A-Side Football Tournament
Eight teams took
part in the West Wiltshire Girls Football Tournament held at The George Ward
School in Melksham
The competition started as two leagues of four with
the winners of each league scheduled to meet in the final match.
All
the matches in League A proved to be closely fought but in the end, Bellefield
of Trowbridge managed to win all of their three games. Although more goals were
scored in League B the winners would have to go through only on goal
difference. Christchurch (Bradford on Avon) and Grove (Trowbridge) were clearly
the strongest teams in the group and the game between them resulted in a 0-0
stalemate. Grove finished their games with a goal difference of seven and going
into the last league game, Christchurch knew that to qualify, they would have
to score five against a plucky Emmaus side. After scoring four there was a
nail-biting wait as time was running out and a penalty shoot-out seemed a
possibility to decide who would qualify.
Then in the last minute of the game, another Christchurch
shot hit the back of the net to give them a place in the final. In the
final, Christchurch created the greater number of scoring opportunities and
managed to finish with two of their chances to run out deserving winners of the
tournament Results

Orienteering Event - 1st
& 2nd October
Due to the popularity of the Orienteering
event this year we held it over 2 days.
30 schools and 250 students took
part. Orienteers from the Sarum and North Wilts Clubs helped with the
day.
The day consisted of schools coming at intervals, getting
instruction, doing introductory routes followed by a timed course. The
enthusiasm of the students was infectious and both days were lovely Autumn
days, a great mix making an excellent event
Matt Andrews, who organised
the days, should be congratulated on a memorable event.

Tournament
The first football tournament of the year was held on
Kingown's Astroturf 12th October.
This was the tournament, which decides
the 2 large schools to represent West Wilts in the County Finals. Thirteen
teams from all over the Partnership took part. The teams were in 4 pools. The
winners and runners up from each group then progressed to the quarter
finals.
There were some excellent matches, well refereed by Young
Leaders from Kingdown Community School.
The final was between
Fitzmaurice from Bradford-on-Avon and Bitham Brook. As the final whistle saw
the teams drawing, it was decided both teams should share the title and go on
to the County Finals on 26th January at Stanley Park.

New SSCo represents
GB
By now many of you will have already met
Phil Wylie, our new Sports Coordinator for John of Gaunt cluster but did you
know he's also our very own international, super-sports star?
Phil has
just returned from the World Championship for duathlon where he represented
Great Britain and came 13th. Some achievement, eh?
Phil also regularly
goes to France where he races for a French club, proving that our sports
coordinators learn, inspire and share their skills from first hand
experiences.
The photos are a selection from his activities in North
America and France.
Welcome to the partnership, Phil. The bar is getting
higher.
Annual PLT
Conference
80 teachers quickly got into action during the start
of the new term when we all gathered at Cumberwell golf club to make plans for
another exciting and activity-packed year.
Several new PLT's also joined
the partnership so a big welcome to those.
Guests were Ronnie Heath who
will deliver Fundamentals of Movement sessions, Heather Price who gave us
practical ideas in achieving '"The 5 Hour Offer" and following a number of
workshops, Jill Elbourn spoke about "Professional Development Into The
Future".
Thanks to everyone for attending. The Partnership is poised for
another great year - bring it on!

Fun in the Park -
2009
A total of 173 Yr 6 children from Warminster Primary Schools met at
Warminter Town Park on 15th July to participate in a variety of activities.
This was organised by the West Wilts Schools Sports Partnership, based at
Kingdown School.
The students had a carousel of activities which
included taking pedaloes on the lake, skate boarding in the skate park, golf on
the play and put area, boxercise, tennis, basketball, frisbee, sumo wrestling
and gladiators.
A number of passers-by commented that this is the way the park
should be used, and this was reinforced at the end, as it was great to see so
many young people engaging in activities and enjoying
themselves.
