Warminster & Westbury Kwik Cricket
Festival
The Primary Schools in Warminster and
Westbury held their annual Kwik Cricket Festival on 16th June at the Warminster
Cricket Club ground in Sambourne Road. 14 teams took part and the games were
umpired by Young Sports Volunteers from Kingdown and Matravers Schools.
After the group stages refreshments of drinks and fruit were supplied
by Asda, who sponsor the national Kwik Cricket programme.
The 4
semi-finalists from the group stages were Bitham Brook, Westbury Leigh, Wylye
Valley and the Avenue. It was Wylye Valley and Westbury Leigh who progressed to
the final.
The final was a high standard of cricket with excellent
batting, fielding and bowling from both teams. It was Westbury Leigh who
eventually ran out winners in a very close game. Both these teams now go on to
the Wiltshire Finals to be held at Trowbridge.

Top Up Swimming -
2010
Every year the West Wilts Schools Sports Partnership run
a Top Up Swimming programme. This comprises of an hour swimming every day for a
fortnight for every Year 6 child who is unable to swim 25 metres. The aim is
for every child be able to swim before they go to Secondary School.
In
Warminster 20 children were invited to receive extra swimming lessons. 12 took
of these took up the challenge. Warminster Sports Centre staff worked
tirelessly with these children. At the end of the fortnight they were all
swimming. One unfortunate child broke a finger and was unable to attend all the
sessions, but still managed to swim half a width. The others all swam at least
25 metres and one managed 600 metres.
They were all congratulated and
given a certificate showing how far they could now swim.

Gala
Warminster Primary schools held
their annual swimming galas on 26th may at Warminster Sports Centre. The galas
were organised by the West Wilts School Sports Partnership, based at Kingdown
Sports College. Young volunteers from Kingdown helped run both galas.
In
the morning the large schools; Sutton Veny, St. Georges, Newclose and Minster
held their gala. There were some excellent performances and very close
finishes. Sutton Veny took an early lead but were then overtaken by the
Minster. St. Georges swimmers made a late surge to overtake Sutton Veny and
come within 2 points of overtaking the Minster, who sealed the winning spot by
winning the final 2 relays.
Smaller schools taking part in the
afternoon were; Heytesbury, Princecroft, Crockerton, Wylye Valley and
Heytesbury. It was Crockerton and Wylye Valley who forged ahead. There were
some excellent individual performances and very close races, but it was Wylye
Valley who finished winners by just 5 points, over last year's winners,
Crockerton.

Lions Warminster & Westbury
7-a-side Football Tournament The Warminster & Westbury primary
schools held their annual 7-a-side football tournament on Monday 22nd March.
The tournament was refereed and organised by the Young Leaders from Kingdown
School. Even though conditions were very wet there was still much enthusiasm
and skill on view. At the end of the first rounds, when they played in
leagues, the semi finalists were Westbury Leigh, Avenue, Bitham Brook and St.
Georges. It was the Westbury duo of Bitham Brook and Westbury Leigh who were
triumphant and made it the first all Westbury Final in the 40 years that the
competition had been running. The final was a tense affair with play going from
end to end. Both teams scored a single goal so we entered extra time. Suddenly
Westbury Leigh scored a goal and then 2 more in quick succession to win
4-1.
The medals and trophies were presented by Ray
Harper, President of Warminster Lions Club. The Lions Club have supported this
event for all 40 years of its duration. Updated March 2010
Warminster Cluster Football
Tournament 2010 On Monday 18th January 4 teams competed in a football
tournament to decide who would represent Warminster in the West Wilts School
Sports Partnership football finals. The event was held at Kingdown School and
supported by their Young Leaders , who were excellent. Enthusiastic
teams from Sutton Veny, St. Georges, Minster and Avenue took part. As there
were only 4 teams the tournament was run as a league with everyone playing each
other. Right from the start it was obvious that Avenue and St. Georges were the
teams to beat and both teams reached their final match against each other
unbeaten. In the first half it was very even, however St. Georges managed to
break the deadlock with a single goal. The Avenue school came out of the half
time break inspired, and quickly scored 3 goals to win an excellent match.
All the footballers should be
congratulated on their sportsmanship.

Warminster Primary Schools' Tag
Rugby Festival On Saturday 5th December the Warminster Primary Schools
held their annual Tag Rugby Festival at the Warminster Rugby Club's
ground. Teams from The Avenue, Crockerton, Heytesbury, Horningsham,
Minster and Wylye Valley took part. The teams were in two pools where they all
played each other. In pool 1, good support play by the Minster team meant that
they were convincing winners of the group. Pool 2 was very competitive with
three very evenly matched teams. Two of the three matches ended in draws and
Crockerton were the only team to win a match and that was by a single try in an
8-7 victory over a talented Avenue School team.
In the semi finals Minster just managed to hold on to
a single try victory over Wylye Valley, who were last year winners, and
Crockerton were victorious over a very spirited Horningsham side. In the final
the growing teamwork of the Minster team gave them victory over a talented
Crockerton team. Peter Self and the Lion President, Ray Harper,
presented the Roy Self Cup. Updated December 2009

Rounders at last ! !
For the
first time in 3 years the Warminster Primary Schools were able to hold their
rounders festival as torrential rain had caused the cancellation of the
previous 2 years.
This year, it was a case of turn up and play on
Kingdown and St. Georges playing field, where 6 rounders pitches were marked
out.
