Melksham Young Leaders

Seend School Young LeadersSeveral Melksham Junior Schools have been involved in the Young Leaders Award scheme this summer.

Run by the Sports Leaders Organisation and supported by the Youth Sport Trust, the YLA is aimed at pupils in junior schools who are able to learn more about how to organise and deliver sports activities to younger pupils. The eight-hour course includes areas of work such as utilising space, using appropriate equipment and safety in sports.

The course has already proved popular in Melksham with Bowerhill School gaining the first awards. In the summer term, four other schools joined the scheme with Year 5 being the most popular age group. In this way, it is hoped that the leaders will use their new skills to help staff with sport and physical activities when they join the top year group in the autumn.

Aloeric Win Melksham Football

This year's Melksham Football Competition was won by an impressive Aloeric side in one of the best team performances seen in the five years of the competition.

Holders Shaw could not maintain their record with an early loss against Bowerhill who themselves are normally in contention for the title. Most of the subsequent matches went according to form with the competition still in the balance until the final round of games and it looked as if the Aloeric v Bowerhill game would determine the winners as usual. However, Bowerhill could only draw in their penultimate game against a Manor team who twice came from behind to gain a well-deserved point. But the final match saw Aloeric take the initiative from the start, finally overpowering their opponents with an impressive eight-goal victory.

St Mary's Broughton Gifford were rewarded for their efforts with a hard fought point in their final game against Shaw.
